What is SoCalPeakbagger?
A: A website dedicated to the mountains and peaks of the 10 southern counties of California. Hikers, bikers, equestrians, geo-cachers, and outdoor enthusiests will find (eventuallly) listings of all named summits and unnamed summits with at least 500 feet of prominence. Prominece refers to the height that a peak stands out on its own, rather than elevation which refers to the height above sea level. A peakbagger is someone who enjoys climbing new peaks and adding each climbed peak to a list, from which comes the number of peaks climbed.

Nov 5, 2007

Well, November makes one year for this site. I know this site is rather flat with no detail on the peaks yet. Much of the progress has been behind the scenes. This amateur webmaster has been exposed to CSS, XML, KML, Javascript, PHP, GoogleMaps API and now mySQL. In addition to learning all this new techology, a great deal of the last year was spent pouring over maps, mapping software, websites and books identifying all the peaks (now at 2,004). Now that the dataset is complete its just a matter of stuffing it into a database from which detailed pages can be generated...
